Local-First CAD File Viewing and Privacy Guide
What local-first browser viewing means for STL, STEP, DXF, DWG, and other 3D files, and when hosted samples or app-provided demo assets are loaded.
Open the web app All guidesLocal files stay in the browser workflow
A local-first viewer opens selected files with JavaScript, WebAssembly-capable libraries, and browser memory instead of requiring a server upload for ordinary viewing. This is useful when the model is private, experimental, or too early to share with a cloud service.
3D ViewNow is designed around that model. Local file selection, model inspection, measurements, section preview, conversion handoff, and printer-fit checks run in the browser session. The app does not require a ViewNow account to open a local model.
Know when the network is used
Network access is still used for the web app files, hosted sample models, app-provided demo assets, documentation pages, external marketplace links, and optional advertising on content pages. A hosted sample or format demo asset loads only when the user chooses it from the app or a content page.
If a file is confidential, open it from local storage rather than placing it on a public web location. Avoid sharing storage locations, expiring credentials, or files that are not meant for public access.
Use content pages and app screens differently
The viewer app is an interactive workspace. Its primary purpose is opening and inspecting a local file or selected sample, not reading an article. The format and guide pages are different: they explain how each workflow works, what the viewer can and cannot infer, and how to prepare files before manufacturing.
For that reason, advertising is limited to content pages with substantial publisher text. Interactive app screens, empty loading states, and policy pages should stay focused on the user task and should not be treated as advertising inventory.
FAQ
Are local model files uploaded to 3D ViewNow servers?
Local model viewing is handled in the browser workflow. Hosted samples and app-provided demo assets are separate cases because those assets are intentionally loaded over the network.
Should private files be put on a public web location?
No. For private work, choose a local file from the device instead of placing the model on a public or shared web location.
